The position holder ensures green bean coffee samples are promptly roasted for timely analysis by Coffee Liquorer(s). Core activities prioritize roasting auction catalogue samples and direct offers from farmers.

Daily tasks include implementing instructions from the team lead, monitoring the roaster machine for effectiveness, and reporting maintenance needs. Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) procedures must be fully observed. Proper sanitation within the quality laboratory environment is essential.

Work occurs in a busy coffee laboratory setup within a matrix organization active in over 100 countries, employing 18,000 people globally. Collaboration with Liquorer(s) and laboratory staff supports organoleptic analysis and sample handling. Training other staff on the coffee roasting process fosters team capability.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in coffee roasting operations, preferably in a busy coffee laboratory setup
  • Familiarity with coffee laboratory equipment and testing procedures
  • Strong knowledge of coffee processing methods and industry quality standards
  • Effective oral and written communication and collaboration skills
  • Sensory evaluation skills, including cupping proficiency (added advantage)
  • Post-secondary education training required
  • Certificate and/or Diploma in Coffee Knowledge (added advantage)
  • Computer literate, mainly in Microsoft Office applications

Responsibilities

  • Roast coffee samples from auction catalogues and direct offers from farmers as presented by the Liquorer
  • Set and prepare cupping table for coffee to be organoleptically analyzed
  • Ensure proper sanitation within the quality laboratory environment
  • Handle coffee samples within the coffee laboratory area and discard where required on instruction of a Liquorer
  • Train other laboratory staff on the coffee roasting process
  • Monitor roaster machine for effectiveness and report maintenance needs
  • Implement instructions issued by the team lead
  • Observe Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) procedures fully
