About this role
The Coffee Roaster reports to the Roasting Team Leader and performs all roaster operator functions with a focus on safety, quality, and efficiency. This role involves operating, maintaining, and cleaning coffee roasting equipment. Daily tasks include loading hoppers according to established formulas and conducting quality tests.
Team members monitor roasters, make adjustments to meet profiles, and transfer roasted coffee to bagging and grinding stations for efficient workflows. They record production data into ERP or productivity systems and perform preventive maintenance on schedule. Cleaning and sanitizing roasting areas ensures compliance with standards.
In a team-oriented environment, the role includes assisting in training less experienced roasters and participating in coffee tastings. Compliance with policies like SQF, GMP, HACCP, FDA, OSHA, and others is essential. Flexibility supports changing production schedules and overtime as needed.
Physical demands include standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing up to 10 hours daily, lifting 50 lbs, and pushing/pulling 150 lbs. The position offers opportunities to learn roasting profiles and quality standards for Allegro Coffee. Proficiency grows through hands-on operation and quality assurance practices.
Requirements
- 1+ years' experience in a production environment (roaster, machine operator, or other technical/mechanical role required)
- Food manufacturing experience and knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices preferred
- Strong mechanical abilities
- Ability to learn basic knowledge of all coffee roasting profiles and quality standards
- Must be able to read and understand operator manuals
- Proficient math and computer skills
- Ability to learn tasks performed on tablet and handheld scanner
- Able to perform physical requirements including lifting up to 50 lbs and pushing/pulling 150 lbs
Responsibilities
- Operate coffee roasting equipment meeting all safety, quality, and efficiency standards
- Set up equipment for production
- Monitor each roast, making adjustments to roaster settings as needed to meet profiles
- Transfer roasted coffee to bagging and grinding stations for efficient workflows
- Load and blend green coffee in preparation for roasting
- Record production data into ERP System or Productivity System
- Clean and sanitize equipment in roasting and loading areas
- Perform regular preventive maintenance on roasters and equipment
